[more+]Outrageous fashion, high-seas humor, and a tidal wave of creativity will make a splash at an unique showing of Joan Matey’s Fishy Fashion costumes, as a special three month installation. Presented by local artist Joan Matey and the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR), the fun kicks off Tuesday, September 30, with a Grand Opening at 5:30 pm and the live Fishy Fashion Show at 6 pm, at the ANERR Nature Center, 108 Island Drive in Eastpoint, FL, at the foot of the St. George Island Bridge. The exhibit will be on display through December 31, 2025 and admission is free.
Since 2006, Fishy Fashions have dazzled audiences along the Forgotten Coast, blending pageantry and parody with jaw-dropping costumes made entirely from maritime cast-offs. This wildly imaginative and eco-conscious Fishy Fashion Exhibit will feature an unforgettable lineup of cleverly crafted coastal couture, made from flotsam, jetsam, and repurposed shoreline cast-offs. Attendees can see these one-of-a-kind ensembles up close, each designed using discarded ship sails, beach umbrellas, oyster sacks, sea nets, sponges, and other debris washed ashore. With nearly two decades of experience in crafting “Nautical Nonsense,” Joan brings humor and ingenuity to her work, demonstrating the beauty and potential of reclaimed materials through her intricate, nautical-themed designs.
On display will be several colorful, quirky characters’ costumes, like the intimidating Red Tide She-Devil, the brave St. George the Lionfish Slayer, the mysterious Beach Banditto, the rowdy Sea Vamp, the heroic Legionnaire de Mer, and royals Marine Antoinette and the Duchess of Dog Island. These costumes are made with insane detail, such as sponge busby helmets, belts of painted olive shells, and jackets adorned with medals crafted from old beach chair webbing.
For the Grand Opening on September 30, the ANERR staff will hit the runway in a fashion show, highlighting costumes that reflect today’s coastal challenges, like plastic infiltration and microplastics, while students from Franklin County Schools will also contribute sculptures and fashion accessories created from repurposed materials. Together, the exhibit blends art and science to raise awareness about marine debris and celebrate creative solutions.
A graduate of Florida State University’s Art Department, Joan first conceived the idea nearly 20 years ago inspired by various "trash fashion" shows that made statements about recycling. Since then, her Fishy Fashion characters have become crowd favorites at events across the Forgotten Coast, including the Apalachicola Mardi Gras Barkus Parade and the Carrabelle Culture Crawl. With this unique exhibit, visitors can enjoy the “Dos and Do Knots” of coastal couture in a whole new way. For more information, contact ANERR at (850) 670-7700.

[more+]Water Ways: Indigenous Ecologies and Florida Heritage, opening in September 2025, uses “way” to explore how routes and paths shaped by water have influenced cultural geographies, and the methods, manners, and styles—“ways” through which Indigenous communities have expressed their relationships with water.
The exhibition aims to cultivate a deeper awareness of Indigenous material cultures and ecologies in Florida, in conversation with global perspectives from the Americas and Asia. Water Ways also invites reflection on pressing environmental issues—including water access, ecological change, and climate resilience—by highlighting how communities have long understood and responded to the challenges of living with water. It will feature historical objects from regional collections and MoFA’s permanent holdings, alongside works by three contemporary artists—Wilson Bowers, Harold Garcia V (El Quinto), and Samboleap Tol—whose practices engage with themes of Indigeneity, hydrology, and heritage in Florida and beyond.

[more+]The Museum of Fine Arts is proud to present Akimbo, the first solo exhibition by Florida State University alumna, Zoë Charlton, in her hometown, Tallahassee. Bringing together personal history and collective memory, the exhibition reflects on the ways in which identity is shaped through place. In Akimbo, Charlton reveals how memories and experiences accumulate across time, layering themselves within the Tallahassee landscape.
At the heart of the exhibition is Paul Russell Road, a reimagined and meticulously crafted half-scale model of Charlton’s family home in Tallahassee. This upended house functions as a record of memory, an architectural tool that follows a blueprint informed by lived experience and historical recollection within this Southern landscape. In dialogue with the sculpture is Smokey Hallow, an animated film that evokes the vibrancy and loss of one of Tallahassee’s historic Black American neighborhoods during mid-20th-century urban renewal. Through evocative motion referencing the construction of homes, accompanied by natural and industrial sounds, Charlton develops a parallel record across different media. Together, these works operate as material and immaterial archives, mapping the intertwined histories of people, the built environment, and the landscapes that hold them.

[more+]Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen, opening Tuesday, November 4 and on display until Saturday, November 29, 2025. November is National Native American Heritage Month, and the museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm ET with free admission. (Closed Thursday, November 27 for Thanksgiving.)
“During World War I and World War II, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers,” as they came to be known after World War II, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies.
The Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly, with honor and distinction. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.” (Source: The National Museum of the American Indian).
Visitors are invited to learn about the Native American Servicemembers, including members of the Choctaw, Navajo, Cherokee, Pima, Comanche and other nations that served their country in World War II. Guests can discover the story of the Code Talkers, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy and the stories of the seven Native American Medal of Honor Recipients from WWII.
Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information, visit CampGordonJohnston.com or contact (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

Over the years, the gallery has evolved into more than an exhibition space; it has become a meeting ground for ideas, dialogue, and the forging of community through creativity. The works in From Vision to Reality are not simply selections from artists Venvi has represented—they are echoes of conversations, markers of growth, and embodiments of the spirit that has guided Venvi since its founding. Abstract explorations, narrative-driven compositions, and experimental forms come together in this show as a testament to the gallery’s unwavering commitment to artistic innovation.

Since being blown into town (by a vulgar young lady named Helene), he's played at local venues including the Getaway, Oyster City, the Salty Dawg and Off the Rails. With all due respect to those wonderful spots, the Blue Tavern is his favorite music club, and this will be his third appearance here (not counting several guest spots sitting in with other artists).
Like the Blue Tavern, Charlie is eclectic in his musical tastes. You may not hear much in the way of "pure" blues, bluegrass or anything else, but you will hear some original songs straight from the heart of a veteran entertainer.

[more+]The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to announce a special display featuring vintage bottles of the Forgotten Coast. This exhibit will be on display from Wednesday, October 1 through Sunday, December 28. This unique exhibit will showcase a wide variety of interesting and historical bottles that tell the story of Franklin County’s heritage, industry, and everyday life. Visitors can explore this special exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free, with donations warmly welcomed.
The display will feature Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery bottle, found on nearby St. Vincent Island, once part of the estate of Dr. Raymond V. Pierce, a physician and patent medicine maker. His products, such as Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription, Golden Medical Discovery, and Pleasant Pellets, made him a millionaire, with nearly a million bottles shipped each year. He also founded the Pierce Glass Company, which produced bottles for his own medicines and brands like Pond’s Extract and Lydia Pinkham. In 1907, he purchased St. Vincent Island in Franklin County, where he built a private preserve with roads, cottages, and imported game animals, until his death on the island in 1914.
Other highlights of the exhibit include Coca-Cola bottles bottled locally in Apalachicola. The Apalachicola Coca-Cola Bottling Plant, in operation through the late 1970s, is remembered for its classic green glass bottles embossed with “Apalachicola, FLA” on the bottom. Today, these bottles are sought-after collectibles.
Also on display are bottles from the shipwrecked SS Tarpon, including cherry bottles and beer bottles. Visitors will also see medicine bottles once used by local midwife Tillie Miller, local milk bottles, as well as perfume bottles, and other rare glass finds. All of which provide a glimpse into past daily life in Franklin County.
The Carrabelle History Museum is located at 106 SE Avenue B, in historic downtown Carrabelle, FL. For more information, visit www.carrabellehistorymuseum.org or contact carrabellehistorymuseum@gmail.com or 850-697-2141. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

[more+]The Carrabelle History Museum is honored to announce a special additional display for its Veteran Tribute Exhibit in recognition of Veterans Day. The Veteran Tribute Exhibit pays heartfelt tribute to several local men who bravely served in the armed forces from World War I through Vietnam. Deeply meaningful to the community, this display has touched the hearts of local families and visitors alike. The special addition will be on display from Wednesday, November 5 through Sunday, November 30, 2025.
The exhibit continues to celebrate military veterans with strong ties to Carrabelle and Franklin County, sharing their personal stories of courage, service, and sacrifice. In honor of Veterans Day, this year’s special addition will be Aviation Radioman Petty Officer Second Class David Learoy Rickards. David Rickards was born on October 12, 1921 in Carrabelle to Omer “O. E.” Rickards, a fisherman, and Della Rickards.
At the age of 20, David Learoy Rickards registered for military service in Franklin County. At the time he was working for J.T. Millinor in Carrabelle, FL. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radio operator aboard naval aircraft, a critical part of the aircrew.
On May 30, 1944, Rickards died while in service to his country when the Naval aircraft that he was aboard tragically crashed near Chincoteague Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Virginia. The crash, which happened while the crew were attempting an emergency landing, took the lives of all eleven of the crew. There is a plaque at the Carrabelle Airport in memory of him and two others. His story reflects the deep local roots and ultimate sacrifice of so many Franklin County service members.
In the Veterans Exhibit, visitors will find a moving collection of artifacts offering a glimpse into their experiences both in uniform and at home. The museum extends a special thanks to the families of the honored veterans for sharing their stories and treasured items. Additionally, the museum is grateful for the support of Lisa Keith-Lucas and Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum, whose invaluable collaboration helped make the exhibit possible. The Carrabelle History Museum warmly invites the public to visit and celebrate the legacy of these local heroes.
The Carrabelle History Museum is open Wednesdays from 12–5 pm, Thursdays through Saturdays 10 am–5 pm, and Sundays 12–5 pm. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. The museum is located at 106 SE Avenue B, Carrabelle, FL. For more information, visit www.carrabellehistorymuseum.org or contact carrabellehistorymuseum@gmail.com or 850-697-2141.

Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

[more+]The Allison Christmas Spectacular is celebrating 18 years! Christmas 2025 will feature an unforgettable Christmas at the Tree Farm - a consolidated show at the Havana Christmas Tree Farm, located at 2867 Florida Georgia Hwy (Hwy 27/Monroe St) in Havana, FL.
It is FREE to come see the lights with NO tickets required, and the show is a drive through experience. Showtimes are Thanksgiving through New Year's, from 6-10 pm ET. Tune to 102.1 FM at the Havana Christmas Tree Farm to hear the show. We have sheriffs on schedule to help with traffic flow and safety every night. Be sure to make multiple loops through the show to see as much as possible!
Donations are also being accepted for show and sheriff expenses – either with cash in the donation boxes at the tree farm or on Cash App ($allisonchristmas) and Venmo (@allisonchristmas). We’re again hosting a Charity Drive for our community - accepting food, hygiene, baby, house supplies, pet supplies, clothing, etc. What a great way to help our community, and in ways we may never know!
Thanks to everyone for the continued support and encouragement every year. God continues to work in amazing ways, and we're excited to keep the show going strong, no matter the venues. On with the show - it's all for the glory of God!
*Note that due to this consolidation at the tree farm, the lights are not on Sandy Creek Road this year.
